The Top Dogs Top Health Problems Part 1
Every year the various kennel clubs around the world post a list. It contains the names of the most popular dogs. Based on sales and registrations provided by club data, it provides a snapshot of the various kinds of pure breeds popular among dog owners today. It does not usually describe the breed or list any health issues to these specific breeds. This article looks at the overall top 10 and provides a list of the more common health problems.
Top Dogs
Every year, certain dogs make the list again and again. In Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom the specific breeds of dogs listed may vary. Where there is some commonality is the inclusion of 4 dogs - the Labrador Retriever, the Golden Retriever the German Shepherd and the Boxer. These 4 canines consistently make the top 5 in Canada and the United States and the top 10 in the United Kingdom.
Other popular dogs include the Poodle in Canada and the United States. It is another top 5 canine as is the Yorkshire Terrier. The Beagle and the Shih Tzu are also among the top 10 in the United States and Canada.
From here the 3 countries vary as to the composition of the remaining top dogs. In the United Kingdom, there is a leaning toward spaniels and terriers. The Border Terrier, the English Springer Spaniel, the English Cocker Spaniel, the Staffordshire Terrier and the West Highland Terrier round off the UKs top 10 dogs. In the United States, the list adds Dachshunds and Bulldogs to round up the top 10. In Canada, the remaining 2 members are the Miniature Schnauzer and the Shetland Sheep Dog.
Health Problems By Breed
Labrador Retriever
The public has an ongoing love affair with the Labrador Retriever. This medium to large dog is enthusiastic, social and friendly. It is reliable. It is also very active. This generally even tempered dog is subject to the following health issues.
Arthritis
Canine hip dysplasia (CHD)
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
Cataracts and other eye diseases
Elbow dysplasia
Golden Retriever
Like the Labrador Retriever, the Golden Retriever is a medium to a large dog. It is known for being outgoing, friendly and playful. This even-tempered canine requires moderate exercise and grooming. It is also prone to the following health issues.

Ectropion - The lower eyelid turns outward
Heart disease
Hip dysplasia
PRA
Cancer
Skin allergies
German Shepherd
The German Shepherd or Alsatian is a large, muscular dog. It is even-tempered and highly intelligent. This canine is easily trainable. It requires a high level of activity to keep happy. Affectionate to family and friends, the German Shepherd does have a number of health issues. They include the following:
Bloat or gastric torsion
Epilepsy
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency - a digestive problem
CHD
Elbow dysplasia
Panostetis - a skeletal problem resulting in lameness and pain
Skin ailments such as pyrotraumatic dermatitis (hot spots)
Eye diseases e.g. Pannus cataract or inflammation of the cornea
Heart defects cardiomyopathy
Perianal fistulas (PFs)
Progressive posterior paresis - neural condition
Canine equina syndrome - a neural condition
Health issues can range from mild to severe among the top 3 dogs. You can lessen the chances of your dog becoming a victim to many of these diseases. Be sure to purchase a canine from a registered and recognized breeder. Make sure the dog regularly sees a vet. Be sure to lavish the attention and care you can upon your favorite canine.
